How to use signal words to fill the blank

  1. Find the signal word: 'although', 'but', 'despite' → contrast; 'because', 'so', 'and' → agreement

  2. Predict your own word for the blank from the sentence alone

  3. Match your prediction to the closest option

  4. For two blanks, check that BOTH words fit; eliminate any pair where one word fails

Example

Although the speech was ___, the audience listened politely.

'Although' signals contrast with 'listened politely' → the speech was tedious.
